Olympic Peninsula Transmission Line Reinforcement Project

  • PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

BPA is proposing to upgrade about 14.5 miles of an existing 115-kilovolt (kV) transmission line between Olympia and Shelton substations on the Olympic Peninsula (see map) to a 230-kV line. This new larger transmission line is needed to improve reliability to the loads BPA serves on the Peninsula by increasing voltage stability during winter-peak electric loads, which result mostly from residential and commercial heating.

The double-circuit 230-kV line would be supported by lattice steel towers. The new towers would be taller than the existing wood poles. The new line would connect with an existing BPA 230-kV line that runs between Olympia Substation and Satsop Substation. Several acres of new right-of-way would likely be needed. New equipment would also be added inside the existing electrical yards at Olympia, Shelton, Satsop and Kitsap substations. If BPA decides to build the new line, construction could begin in 2008.

  • CURRENT STATUS:

A Revision Sheet for the EA is available that, with the Preliminary EA, constitutes the Final EA. On March 27, 2008, a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was issued. It includes a Mitigation Action Plan. BPA has decided to proceed with the Proposed Action.

Construction will start in summer 2008 and will be completed in fall 2009.
