Lyle Falls Fish Passage Project
Klickitat County, Washington
-
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In 2006, at the recommendation by the Northwest Power Planning Council, BPA commenced
with an environmental analysis of the proposed Lyle Falls Fishway modifications.
This project is located on the lower Klickitat River in Klickitat County, Washington,
about two miles from the confluence with the Columbia River.
The modifications would improve fish passage for salmonids, facilitate fish movements
into spawning areas of the Klickitat River watershed, and facilitate collection
and monitoring of biological information for future fishery management. The primary
benefits of the project would be to fall Chinook and coho salmon, but the improvements
would also facilitate migration for spring Chinook salmon, steelhead trout, Pacific
lamprey and coho salmon. The Lyle Falls Fishway is owned by Washington Department
of Fish and Wildlife and operated by the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama
Nation.

CURRENT STATUS:
BPA completed and issued a draft and final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)
on March and December 2008, respectively for this project. BPA then followed by
issuing a Record of Decision (ROD) on February 20, 2009 in which the Administrator
granted approval to fund the proposed (preferred) action as defined in the EIS.
BPA has prepared a supplemental analysis to address design changes made subsequent
to the Final EIS and ROD. Based on the supplement analysis, BPA has determined that
a supplemental EIS is not required. Construction began in August 2009 and will be
completed in 2011.
