How Wildlife Crediting Habitat Units Might Change Over Time

The diagrams below illustrate how Habitat Units (HUs) might change over time as Habitat Evaluation Procedure (HEP) surveys are conducted within a hypothetical Wildlife Management Area. The diagrams are also annotated with the terms BPA uses to describe the different types of HUs. For simplicity, the diagrams describe a scenario where the Area contains a single Parcel, and where that Parcel is surveyed for a single Wildlife Species.

Baseline Follow-up #1 Follow-up #2 Follow-up #3
Baseline HEP Survey of the
Parcel conducted shortly after
land acquisition.

At this point, because there is
only one survey, the Baseline,
Protected, and Current HUs
are all the same.
Follow-up HEP Survey of the
Area conducted after 5 years.
In this scenario, the habitat has degraded due to wildfire.

Notice how the Protected
(and Current) HUs are adjusted downwards to reflect the
degraded habitat.
Follow-up HEP Survey of the
Area conducted after 10 years.
In this scenario, the habitat has rebounded due to habitat improvements.

Notice how the Protected HUs
are back up to the Baseline,
and that the Current HUs are
the sum of the Protected and
the Enhanced HUs.
Follow-up HEP Survey of the
Area conducted after 15 years.
In this scenario, once again the habitat has degraded, this time
due to invasive species.

Notice how the Protected HUs
are back up to the Baseline,
and that once again the
Current HUs equal the
Protected HUs.
